How to Connect Finmap to Claude and Automate Routine Tasks

How to connect Finmap to Claude and schedule category assignment, payment splits and transfers — for anyone who wants less manual routine.

The AI advisor in Finmap handles your requests while you're chatting with it. To have routine work done automatically — categories, payment splits, transfers — connect Finmap to Claude and put a task on a schedule. Your computer can stay off.

1. Connect Finmap to Claude

MCP is a bridge between Finmap and Claude. Through it, Claude sees your transactions, accounts and categories and can work with them.

  1. In Finmap, open Settings → For developers → API and copy your API key.
  2. In Claude, open Customize → Connectors → Add → Add custom connector.
  3. Paste https://api.finmap.online/mcp, click Continue and enter your API key.

To check, ask Claude: “Show my accounts in Finmap.” If you get a list of accounts, you're all set.

2. Test a prompt in chat

A prompt is a written task for Claude. Copy one of the examples into a regular chat and check what changed in Finmap's Transactions. If the result isn't right, refine the text and try again.

Assign categories

“Find yesterday's transactions in Finmap that have no category. For each one, pick a category from the existing ones based on the comment, counterparty and similar transactions. Don't create new categories. If you're unsure, change nothing and add the transaction to a ‘Needs review’ list. Don't touch the amount, date or account.”

Split a payment

“Find yesterday's expenses in Finmap from counterparty [name]. Split each one: 70% to category [category 1], 30% to [category 2]. Don't change the amount, date or account.”

Merge into a transfer between your accounts

“Find pairs in Finmap from yesterday: an expense from one of my accounts and income to another of my accounts for the same amount, in the same currency, no more than 1 day apart. For each pair, first create a transfer between these accounts for the same amount with the expense date and check that it appears. Only then delete the original expense and income. If a pair isn't clear, change nothing and add it to a ‘Needs review’ list.”

Be specific: which period, what to change and what to leave alone. Claude can not only edit data but also delete it.

3. Put the prompt on a schedule

From now on, Claude runs your tested prompt on its own — daily, weekly or on weekdays.

  1. In Claude's left menu, open Scheduled → New task → Set up manually.
  2. Name the task and paste your prompt.
  3. For the first runs, turn on action approval: Claude will wait for your “yes” before making changes.
  4. Choose how often it runs and save the task.
  5. Run it once manually and check Transactions.

Want a summary? Connect Slack or email in Customize → Connectors and add to the end of your prompt: “When you're done, send me a Slack message with what was done and what needs review.”

FAQ

How is this different from the AI advisor?

The AI advisor handles a request while you're chatting with it. A task in Claude runs on its own schedule, even when you're not around.

Auto-rules or a task in Claude — which should I use?

Auto-rules suit simple conditions like “counterparty X → category Y” and apply instantly. A task in Claude fits when the decision depends on context, or when you need to split a payment or merge a transfer. Using both works best. About auto-rules →

What do I need?

A paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) and a Finmap API key. The task has the same permissions and limits as your API key.

How do I stop a task?

In Scheduled, you can pause, edit or delete the task. To fully revoke access to Finmap, revoke the API key in Finmap settings.
